Finally posting

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, for a good but at the same time ridiculous reason. Our four and a half year old computer’s memory was failing. I couldn’t even upload pictures from my camera without maxing out the memory and having to delete files and/or programs in order to get pictures up! This is partly due to the age of the computer (I think 4 human years are probably 25 computer years!) and also because we had over 20,000 pictures stored on our computer–stored numerous times in various programs–Pictures, Windows Gallery, Picasa, Zoombrowser. I’ll take the blame for this–we got our digital camera two days before Emma was born and I never really figured out a good organizational system for photos before life got too busy to take a day or two or more to figure that out. Anyways, our computer officially died 2 weeks ago and now we are the proud owners of a new one–a fresh start toward organizing all of these precious images!!

So, here are some photos of Christmas…finally…

We traveled to Oostburg for Christmas. What we noticed this time was how the cousins were really at the ages where they loved playing together. We saw this especially between Emma (6) and Aubrey (2 weeks shy of 5). These two hit it off. Aubrey left the day before we did and Emma was so sad! We found little notes around the house that said “Emma and Aubrey” with hearts and birds (Emma’s love) drawn all over them. So precious. We never know how the ages will line up and how their interests will either, but it was so beautiful to watch.

Emma lost her 2nd front tooth in church the day after Christmas. Curt was in the midst of being called up to speak at the church’s “Moment for Mission” because they support InterVarsity, and as he was getting up, her tooth fell out! He got to announce her lost tooth from the pulpit–it was pretty sweet! :)

Claire received her heart’s desire for Christmas–princess accessories, gowns, crowns, shoes…this girl will sing throughout the day, mostly princess themed songs. I always have to smile when I hear her sing from the Little Mermaid, the song that goes “Up where they walk, up where the run, up where they play all day in the sun.” She thinks that the song is in Spanish and sings (pronounced)…”Athweyde run, athweyde walk.” She’s usually singing this full volume, with vibrato, while she is focusing intensely on a craft or project. Our house is rarely, if ever, quiet. Sometimes, even with this, it does feel peaceful though.

I really wanted a cousin picture to put up on our picture wall. This is what we got…remember, 7 children 6 and under (pic is minus Olivia who didn’t want to be photographed :)

Sledding on the mountain of snow from the church parking lot!

This year in lieu of gifts, we siblings went out for an evening and spent some non-kid time together. Definitely something we’ll do again!

After Oostburg, we spent 3 days in Chicago, just the five of us before continuing on to Iowa. We stayed at a hotel downtown, enjoyed the pool, Navy Pier, and Michigan Mile, and lots of hanging out as a family. It was restful and connecting. We’re hoping we can do this again–Chicago is so beautiful at Christmas time.

Nice view from our 34th floor room.

Then, we traveled on to Des Moines, where we were greeted by Mom, Dad, Reuben, Heidi, Eden and Harper and a delicious salmon dinner and presents when we arrived! Here are these two boys–each of them such characters, yet in such different ways. Being 4 months apart, we’re sure that they will create some great memories in the years to come!

The girls in their Christmas PJ’s.

Levi is quite the Mommy’s boy. Anybody who has experienced him around me and then not around me will agree. He loves to cuddle. Loves to sit on my lap while I read, even if it isn’t to him. He is definitely my little buddy…allllll dayyyy longggg…… :) Maybe this is because he is beginning to experience what it will mean for him in his life to have 2 older sisters. The most recent “game” they have played with him is to tie a long string around the wheel of one of his favorite cars and have one of them place the car on the floor and draw his attention to it. When he becomes interested, and goes for the car, the other girl who is hiding around the corner with the other end of the string yanks the string, the car moves, he chases it, they laugh and giggle. He screams in frustration. It is really quite humorous…!

Special moment between Great Grandma and Snow White.

At the Waveland Cafe—yes, Emma does have birds in her hair. They are everywhere…Emma’s most recent prayer…”Thank you God for everyone (she lists everyone she can think of)….but especially Nana. That’s right, especially her. Amen.”

We had a wonderful 9 days of travel (wonderful even though the flu made its rounds). We loved seeing most of our family members and spending some time away from home.

And now, to some recent days around here…

I should have known not to be concerned about my girls becoming too focused on Princess Barbies. This is what I found Emma creating a “story” around during her rest time. It was pretty entertaining–Barbie being held captive by dinosaurs and lizards. That’s my girl.

We’re taking almost daily trips to the Wilcox Park hill for sledding. This is the first year, with the kids ages, that they’ve really enjoyed this. I love those winter rosy cheeks.

We’re off to a good start of 2011…these 3 little kiddos definitely keep us busy, focused, laughing, crying, praying, and yes, of course crazy sometimes.

This holiday season

I’m uploading all of our pics since Thanksgiving today, trying to sort through them all, so I can clear out the memory card before our travels–it’s a big job, but fun to look through all the experiences we’ve had over the past month or so. We have so many pictures on our computer that I have had to clean up files and free up disc space just to get these pics on. One of our plans for the new year is to figure out a better way to organize photos. Any ideas out there??

I feel like I have a lot more space in my head these past couple of days. I wrapped up teaching last week and got all my grading finished and grades submitted on Friday. Whew–this has been a very intense semester for me work wise. Teaching this 4 credit senior level social work class, to 26 students, alone (last year I co-taught) while doing about 15 hours of therapy a week plus some other work ventures that bleed over into home life has really been too much–I crossed the threshold of what I think is a good balance for me. Our kids are at a busy stage–seems I am saying this alot these past 6 years :) –Levi is all over the place and is still getting his language down (results in days of alot of screeching, which tries my patience), the girls are at two different schools, half days with no bussing, which equals alot of transport and logistical planning just getting to and from places. So, I ended up going through the days and weeks at a pace that worked somehow, but now that things are slowing down, I realize that I just don’t quite know how to relax. I am working on just being able to sit, be present with the kids, think about some things that have been on the back burner for a while. I’m hopeful that the coming months will bring more of this type of pace…

We’re looking forward to leaving this week for Wisconsin, spending several days there with all of the Kuiper family over Christmas. Then we’re going to spend 2 days in Chicago with just our family, doing some family friendly things, while staying at a hotel downtown, which I’m excited about. Then we’ll head over to Iowa to see some Kwaaks and Veenstras over New Years. I’m excited, and ready to take a step back and enjoy my family.

Here are some pics of the past month’s collection–Thanksgiving in Ontario at Reuben and Heidi’s, getting ready for Christmas and enjoying snow here, and our family Christmas this past weekend–our emerging traditions are wonderful to experience as our children grow older and are more able to anticipate…and participate.

Some of my favorite quotes from the kids lately…

“I am so excited for Christmas, my heart is just tickling!!”–Emma, a couple days before we opened our family presents.

“Oh, I can’t wait to see Claire’s face when she opens my gift, she’s going to be so excited!!”–Emma, referring to a bird craft she made and wrapped for Claire, all on her own initiative. My hope for my kids developing empathy was revived by this statement of hers :) Yes, there has been much sibling competition and squabbles lately. Sigh…

“Ball! Car!”–Levi, with accompanying sounds and signs, when opening his Christmas present.

“And then he followed the light, because Jesus was in his heart”–Claire, referring to one of her stuffed animals, in narrative play with Emma, while Emma was creating a flashlight path for the animal to follow. Yes, this is the truth, isn’t it?!

Emma, Claire, and Curt attended a local production of “Beauty and the Beast” as a daddy & daughters date. Lately, they both love getting dressed up, wearing tights and skirts. Claire loves to have her hair curled. Notice Emma has lost her front tooth!!

American Thanksgiving in Canada! First, the train to Toronto…

Papa, Harper, Emma, Nana

The girls got some pretty intense face painting while at the craft market in Toronto. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it! Reuben & Eden:

Waiting for the train back:

Isn’t the action always in the kitchen?

Playtime=dancing, wrestling, reading, crafting. And, yes, it did feel as action oriented as the photos suggest :)

All the grandkids!

Setting up our house for Christmas. We think that this is the year to replace our $5 garage sale Christmas tree we’ve had for 6 years–what do you think? You can’t see the duct tape in this picture…

First snow…a bit late this year, which I am more than okay with, but the girls were so ready to get out and play!

Heading out into Eastown for the annual “Holiday Shop Hop”–businesses open with goodies, drinks, and a trolley around the neighborhood. Here with our friend Kelly.

A whole Saturday for making Koinonia granola–a yummy gift for teachers, friends, neighbors that we made all the time when we lived in Koinonia.

Claire’s ballet show, which she looked forward to for weeks. And with her teacher, Miss Annie, whose face she wanted on her birthday cake (we convinced her that a ballerina figurine might be a better idea!)

Curt and I looking snazzy for his IV Christmas party. It was “black tie.” After trying on my closet full of bridesmaid dresses, I settled on this dress from our dating days, I guess a simple black dress never goes out of style, right?!

Our three kids–age 1, 4, 6…after opening their Christmas PJ’s the night before our ‘Family Christmas.’

“No more pictures, Mommy!!”

Morning stocking chaos.

Feeding each other all the mint packs in their stockings. At 7 am.

This boy loves cars. We know where he has been by finding lines of 4-6 matchbox cars all over the house.

Frederick Meijer Gardens

Real Reindeer (“Mommy…do you think they’ll be able to….FLY?!”–Emma before we arrived)

In front of the “Netherlands” tree–tried to explain our heritage to the girls. Not sure they comprehended immigration at this point.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

latest pics

Here are some pics of what has been going on over here. Our Halloween costuming was pretty random this year–we had a ghost, a princess, and a crocodile. I guess that’s what you get when you combine two girls with very developed opinions of what they want to be and a hand me down for the little boy :) No more coordinated holidays over here!

Around Eastown…I had planned on wearing an old prom dress–too cold!!!

PumpkinĀ  cookies and decorating–a fall tradition rooted in Curt’s childhood! This year most of the cookies were decorated as birds–Emma’s latest interest.

Levi generally spends his time playing with balls and lining up cars. He wanted to get in on the baking action.

A visit from Grandpa & Grandma Kuiper and a cold visit to the apple orchard.
